How to Choose the Right Lighting for Your Home (Philippines Guide)

Lighting is one of the most overlooked decisions in home design — yet it changes everything from how a room feels to how much your electricity bill costs each month. Whether you’re building a new home, renovating, or just tired of that one harsh overhead bulb, here’s a practical guide to choosing lighting that actually works for your space.

1. Start With How the Room Is Used

Before picking a single fixture, ask what happens in the room. A kitchen needs bright, even task lighting for food prep. A living room benefits from layered, softer light for relaxing and entertaining. Bedrooms call for warm, dimmable options that don’t feel clinical at night. Matching light to activity — not just aesthetics — is the single biggest factor in getting a room “right.”

2. Understand the Three Layers of Lighting

Professional lighting design usually works with three layers, and combining them is what makes a space feel intentional rather than flat:

  • Ambient lighting – your main source of overall illumination (ceiling fixtures, recessed lights)
  • Task lighting – focused light for specific activities (under-cabinet lights, desk lamps, reading lights)
  • Accent lighting – used to highlight architecture, art, or decor (wall sconces, LED strips, spotlights)

A room that only has ambient lighting often feels sterile. Adding even one accent piece — a warm LED strip along a ceiling cove, for example — makes a noticeable difference.

3. Get the Color Temperature Right

Color temperature, measured in Kelvin (K), is one of the most common mistakes homeowners make when buying lights. As a general guide:

  • 2700K–3000K (warm white) — cozy, relaxing; ideal for living rooms and bedrooms
  • 3500K–4000K (neutral white) — balanced; works well in kitchens and bathrooms
  • 5000K–6500K (cool/daylight white) — bright and energizing; best for garages, workspaces, or industrial areas

Mixing color temperatures within the same room is one of the fastest ways to make a space feel “off,” even if the individual fixtures are good quality.

4. Choose LED for Efficiency — But Check the Quality

LED lighting has become the standard for good reason: lower energy consumption, longer lifespan, and less heat output than traditional bulbs. But not all LEDs are equal. Look for:

  • A CRI (Color Rendering Index) of 80+ so colors — including skin tones — look accurate
  • Reputable wattage-to-lumen ratios rather than just chasing the cheapest price per bulb
  • Dimmable-compatible drivers if you plan to install dimmer switches

5. Don’t Forget Fixture Placement and Scale

Even the best fixture looks wrong if it’s the wrong size or in the wrong spot. A common mistake is hanging a pendant or chandelier too high or too small for the space beneath it. As a rule of thumb, a dining table chandelier should hang about 30–36 inches above the tabletop, and its width should be roughly half to two-thirds the width of the table.

6. Plan for Maintenance, Not Just Installation

Beautiful lighting only stays beautiful if it’s maintained. Chandeliers and multi-fixture setups collect dust and lose brightness over time, and DIY cleaning can be risky for tall or delicate fixtures. Scheduling periodic professional cleaning keeps both the look and the light output where it should be.

7. When in Doubt, Get a Lighting Plan

Trying to choose every fixture room-by-room, on your own, is where most lighting projects go over budget or end up mismatched. A lighting consultation — mapping out ambient, task, and accent lighting across the whole home before you buy anything — almost always saves money and produces a more cohesive result than picking fixtures room by room as an afterthought.
